2018 Opening of Trail Ridge Road

One of the best getaways to Estes Park is for the opening of Trail Ridge Road. Rocky Mountain National Park, typically, opens Trail Ridge Road the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend. This year, that’s May 25.

The iconic Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved highway in the US. It’s always a scenic and dramatic drive. But on opening weekend and during the ensuing week, the views are even more spectacular. The cuts of the snowplows on Trail Ridge Road form snow walls as high as 20’. They make for unforgettable sights and spectacular photo opportunities.

Opening week guests have the privilege of “snow graffiti” in the walls of snow along Trail Ridge Road.

Some years, snowy conditions at high elevations force the park to postpone the full opening as snowplows work to re-plow accumulating snow. Even going part way up Trail Ridge Road is a fun and exhilarating experience. Of course, the rest of Rocky Mountain National Park is open for fun and adventure, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives.
